This kitchen island remodel was performed by Done to Spec in conjunction with International Kitchens’ John Ko, who did the design work and assisted with product selection. The clients recently moved into a beautiful home on Union Hill in Redmond. One of their few complaints was…
…with the inefficient kitchen island. The old island was positioned at an angle to the rest of the kitchen, which resulted in wasted floor space. The island countertop was also small compared with the size of the kitchen. At their previous home, the clients had converted from a natural gas cooktop to an induction cooktop, so they decided to do the same with this kitchen.
The new island fits perfectly within the kitchen. The dark walnut cabinets blend well with the existing perimeter cabinets. The quartz countertop (Course Marfil) also matches well with the perimeter granite counters. The new island has much more storage space and even has room for a wine fridge. A unique feature that John designed and which the homeowners love, are the cabinet supports on each end of the island. They give the island a furniture feel, rather than being a big box in the middle of the floor. To accommodate their tall stature, the homeowners also chose to raise the height of the island, so that the finished height is 39″ rather than the standard 36″. The new cooktop hood was relocated from the previous position, which also required some lighting changes and drywall work in the ceiling. The electrical hookup and cooktop installation were also completed by Done to Spec.
